How to Keep the City Clean with Awareness After Qurbani

Eid-ul-Adha is a truly special moment of joy. It is a festival that brings with it a sacred message of sacrifice. On this day, more than a crore sacrificial animals are offered across the country in hopes of pleasing the Creator. Performing our humanitarian and ethical duties towards the animals before Qurbani is an extremely important matter. However, our social responsibility after Qurbani is no less significant. Keeping our city clean and tidy after Qurbani is a collective responsibility for all of us. If we are a little more aware in fulfilling this responsibility beforehand, the joy of Eid will be doubled. Let's first understand the importance of Qurbani waste management:

Qurbani waste, especially animal blood, bones, offal, hides, etc., if not properly removed, becomes a serious nuisance and threat to the environment and public health. For example:

  • Environmental Pollution: Leaving waste in open spaces pollutes the air, which can cause various diseases including respiratory problems. Additionally, this waste also contaminates soil and water sources.
  • Disease Spread: Animal waste rapidly breeds bacteria, which helps in the proliferation of mosquitoes and flies. This increases the risk of serious diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, cholera, and anthrax.
  • Damage to City Aesthetics: Leaving waste everywhere spoils the beauty of the city and creates an uncomfortable environment for pedestrians.

Here's Some Effective Steps That We Can Do

To keep our city clean after Qurbani, each of us can take some simple but effective steps:

  1. Sacrifice at Designated Locations Try to perform the sacrifice at locations designated by the City Corporation or local authorities. This simplifies the waste collection and disposal process. If that is not possible, perform the sacrifice within your own home's courtyard or a specific boundary so that blood and waste do not spread.
  2. Prompt Waste Removal Immediately after the sacrifice, clean up the animal's blood and other waste. Wash away blood thoroughly with water and collect the waste in polythene bags, seal them well, and place them in designated areas. Do not leave perishable waste for too long.
  3. Use of Polythene or Sacks Collect all animal waste (offal, bones, leftover parts) in thick polythene bags or sacks and tie the mouth securely. Ensure that the bags do not tear and waste does not spill out. You can use bags supplied by the City Corporation or procure sturdy bags on your own initiative.
  4. Utilize City Corporation Helplines Dhaka North and South City Corporations implement special arrangements for Qurbani waste removal. Call their hotline numbers to request waste disposal. They will collect waste from designated spots in your area. This activity usually begins from noon on Eid day.
  5. Use Bleaching Powder or Disinfectants After cleaning the sacrificial site, sprinkle bleaching powder or other disinfectants there. This will eliminate foul odors and reduce the risk of germ spread.
  6. Proper Management of Animal Hides Promptly remove the hides of sacrificial animals. Leaving them for too long causes foul odors to spread. Deliver the hides to designated collection centers or madrasahs for sale.
  7. Assist Cleaning Staff Cooperate with those responsible for waste collection and disposal. Place the waste in such a way that it is easy for them to collect.

Our collective effort can keep our city clean. Keeping our city clean after Qurbani is not solely the responsibility of the City Corporation; it is our collective ethical and social duty. Your small awareness and responsible behavior can maintain a beautiful and clean city.
