20 rules to be aware of regarding the new Road Safety Law 2018

The government of Bangladesh has already begun implementing the much-discussed Road Safety Law 2018. On this occasion, the official gazette was announced by govt. on October 22, 2019. Experts think that the new law will work to eliminate the problems and limitations of the law regarding road accidents and road safety in Bangladesh. Under the new law, all forms of punishment have been modified and increased. Truck drivers should also be aware of this recent implemented law. Let's find out the significant 20 provisions of this law.

Important 20 provisions of the new law:

  • Driving a motor vehicle without a license will cost in 6 months in jail or a fine of Tk 25,000 or both.
  • If anyone drives a motor vehicle even after suspension, or revocation of a license then he will be sentenced to 3 months imprisonment, or a fine of Tk 25,000 or both.
  • If a driver's license is prepared, issued or renewed without the permission of authority then the driver will be sentenced to 6 months to 2 years of jail or fined Tk 1-5 lakh or be punished with both.
  • If anyone drives a motor vehicle even after his/her driving license is suspended, revoked or canceled, then he/she will be sentenced to 3 months imprisonment or a fine of Tk 25,000 or both.
  • Driving a motor vehicle without registration will be punishable by up to 6 months in jail, or a fine of Tk 50,000 or both.
  • If anyone drives a motor vehicle without fitness, then the motorist will be sentenced to 6 months in jail or a fine of Tk 25,000 or both.
  • Driving a motor vehicle without a route permit will be punishable by up to 3 months in prison, or a fine of Tk 20,000, or both.
  • If anyone disobeying the restrictions on commercial use of a motor vehicle, then he/she will be sentenced to a term of 3 months, or a fine of Tk 25,000, or both, and in the case of driver, an additional 1 point for the offense will be deducted.
  • Extra fare on public transportation will be punishable by up to 1 month of imprisonment, or a fine of Tk 10,000, or both, and in the case of the driver, an extra 1 point will be deducted.
  • If you disobey the technical instructions of a motor vehicle placed by the authorities, you will be punished with a jail of 1-3 years, or a fine of Tk 3 lakh, or both.
  • In case of violating traffic signs or signal, one will be sentenced to a 1-month of jail, or a fine of Tk 10,000, or both, and in the case of the driver, an extra 1 point will be deducted.
  • Carrying extra weight on a motor vehicle will be punishable by up to 1 year in prison, or a fine of Tk 1 lakh, or both, and in the case of the driver, 2 points will be deducted.
  • Talking on a mobile phone while driving a motor vehicle will impose a verdict of 1 month of jail or a fine of Tk 25,000.
  • In violation of motor vehicle speed limitation, you will be sentenced to a 3-month of jail or a fine of TK 10,000, or both, and in the case of the driver, an extra 1 point will be deducted.
  • In case of violating the sound/horn law, you will be sentenced to a 3-month of jail or a fine of TK 10,000, or both, and in the case of the driver, an extra 1 point will be deducted. 
  • If the motor vehicle didn't park at the right place or the passenger or goods are not flown to the exact destination, there will be a fine of Tk 5,000.
  • The death sentence has been kept under Article 302 for intentionally killing people by driving.
  • An accident due to reckless driving or competition will cause up to 3 years in jail or a fine of Tk 3 lakh or both. The court may direct to pay the entire or part of the fine to the victim. 
  • If ​​any person is seriously injured or killed in a motor vehicle accident, then the accused driver will be sentenced to 5 years in jail and a maximum fine of Tk 5 lakh.
  • Under the new law, A driver must pass at least class 8 to get the driving license and the driver's assistant must pass class 5. In the previous law, there was no need for educational qualifications. 

 

The government and the concerned authorities have been working to implement and create awareness about this newly enacted 'Road Transport Act 2018'. Truck Lagbe is also working to raise awareness among the truck drivers and owners regarding this new law.
